Virginia Sea Grant Graduate Research Fellowship

About the fellowship
  • Supports Ph.D. students engaged in coastal and marine research relevant to Virginia and the VASG strategic plan.
  • Fellows work with an outreach or end-user mentor to ensure that their research results are useful and used by stakeholders.
  • Fellows will be provided with professional development opportunities focusing on science communication, the science-to-management process, adoption of innovation, and other Sea Grant activities.
  • Two to four fellowships will be awarded.
  • Fellowships begin June 1, 2012.
  • Support: Up to $40,000 per year for up to two years; PIs must meet 50% match requirement.
Eligibility
  • Students must be enrolled in or admitted to a full-time graduate or professional degree program at a Virginia academic institution at a Ph.D. or equivalent level.
  • Students may be working toward a degree in any discipline related to Virginia coastal and marine issues as noted in the VASG strategic plan.

  • Signed cover sheet
  • Academic CV/Resume (2-page maximum)
  • Undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable)
  • Three letters of recommendation, including one from primary academic advisor and one from outreach mentor
  • Career goal statement (1-page maximum)
  • Project description (4-page maximum)
  • Literature cited
  • Timeline and tasks
  • Budget and budget justification (use SG Form 90-4 and 90-4 Guidance).
  • Proof of acceptance, provisional acceptance, or enrollment in a Ph.D. program in a relevant field of study.

Trawling for a Better Way to Assess Fish Health

On a warm morning last August, Ryan Schloesser and his labmate, student Lauren Nys, trawled off Oyster, VA. After a summer filled with collecting fish, they worked with experienced ease, throwing around jokes as smoothly as they tossed their nets behind the boat. What they pull up in their nets should help fisheries managers better predict the size of fish populations.
