Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School students won the 2013 Blue Crab Bowl, continuing a winning streak that began in 2008. This year’s Blue Crab Bowl was held at Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on February 9. Other placing teams included Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School-Glenns Campus in second, Fauquier High School’s Team A from Warrenton in third, and Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School Team A  from Warsaw in fourth.

The Blue Crab Bowl is Virginia’s only ocean and marine science quiz competition for high school students. Using questions designed by marine scientists and educators, the contest tests students’ knowledge of oceanography, geology, biology, maritime history, and policy. The Bowl provides a forum for students who excel in math and science to receive regional and national recognition for their diligence and talent. The competition is organized by VIMS and Old Dominion University’s Department of Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences.

Virginia’s top place team qualifies to move on to the national competition of the National Ocean Science Bowl, held this year April 18-21 in Milwaukee, WI.
